Aluminum Stringers
for Outdoor Staircases
Learn more
Aluminum stringers are the load-bearing structure of your outdoor staircase. They support the steps and give the staircase its shape: straight, L-shaped or corner. At Vaudry Villeneuve, we manufacture custom aluminum stringers in our Terrebonne workshop, tailored to the exact dimensions of your project.
Our stringers are made entirely of aluminum, coated with factory-baked powder paint. They do not rust, do not rot and require no maintenance. Combined with our aluminum steps or our fiberglass steps, they form a complete, durable staircase that complies with Quebec Building Code standards.

Available Aluminum Stringer Models
We offer three stringer models to suit all architectural styles and staircase configurations.
Closed Stringer
The closed stringer covers the risers, providing a clean look and a neat finish. It is the classic choice for residential staircases where you want a polished appearance without seeing the structure underneath. Available in several standard colors.
Open Stringer
The open stringer is the most popular model. It leaves the risers visible, creating an airy and modern effect. This model is often chosen for patio staircases and ground-level decks where a contemporary look is desired. The open structure also allows better air circulation and natural drainage in winter.
Heritage Stringer
The heritage stringer reproduces the classic profile of traditional welded staircases. It is the model required in heritage districts of several Quebec municipalities. It also suits anyone who prefers the traditional aesthetic of a aluminum staircase, without the price of a fully custom-welded staircase.
All our stringers are custom-manufactured and coated with factory-baked powder paint. Available in white, black, commercial brown and clay.

FAQ: Aluminum Stringers
What Is a Staircase Stringer?
The stringer is the inclined structural piece that supports the steps of a staircase. It is the “backbone” of the staircase: without a stringer, the steps have nothing to rest on. A standard outdoor staircase requires two stringers (one on each side). For wider staircases, a center stringer can be added to reinforce the structure.
Why Choose an Aluminum Stringer Over Wood?
Treated wood is the traditional material for outdoor staircase stringers, but it degrades quickly in Quebec. Wood cracks through freeze-thaw cycles, rots from moisture and requires staining every two to three years. Aluminum is corrosion-resistant, does not warp and maintains its rigidity for decades. Factory-baked powder paint eliminates all maintenance.
How to Choose the Right Stringer for Your Outdoor Staircase?
The choice depends on three factors: the desired style (closed for a clean look, open for a modern look, heritage for a classic look), your municipality’s requirements (some heritage districts require a specific model) and your staircase configuration (straight, L-shaped, corner). Contact us with your measurements and we will advise you on the best model for your project.
What Is the Difference Between an Open and Closed Stringer?
The closed stringer covers the risers for a complete finish and clean look. The open stringer leaves the risers visible, creating a more airy and contemporary effect. Both offer the same structural strength. The choice is primarily aesthetic.
How Many Stringers Are Needed for an Outdoor Staircase?
A standard staircase requires two stringers, one on each side. For staircases wider than 36 inches, a third center stringer is recommended to support the steps in the middle and prevent any flexing. For very wide staircases (over 48 inches), additional stringers may be necessary.
Can You Buy Aluminum Stringers Online?
Yes. Vaudry Villeneuve offers aluminum stringers for sale online with delivery. You provide your measurements (total height, number of steps and desired depth) and we manufacture your custom stringers in our workshop. The materials are delivered ready to install.
Are Aluminum Stringers Compatible with Fiberglass Steps?
Yes. Our aluminum stringers are designed to accommodate both aluminum steps and fiberglass steps. The combination of aluminum stringers and fiberglass steps is very popular in Quebec for its durability and waterproofing.
