Pool fence regulations in Quebec in 2026
The Residential Swimming Pool Safety Regulation governs the installation and the compliance of fences everywhere in Quebec. Four main requirements apply to every pool holding at least 60 cm of water.
Minimum height of 1.2 metres
The fence has to measure at least 1.2 metres (4 feet) from ground level or from any nearby structure that could be climbed. No table, bench, decorative stone or shrub should serve as a foothold for climbing over the barrier. This requirement applies around the full perimeter of the pool, with no exceptions.
Maximum 10 cm spacing between bars
Openings in the fence must prevent a spherical object 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter from passing through. This rule is meant to keep young children from slipping between the bars. For chain-link fences, openings must measure 30 mm or less, or be fitted with privacy slats that reduce the gap.
Self-closing gates and automatic latching
Every gate giving access to the pool must close and latch automatically after each use. The safety latch has to be installed on the inside of the fence, out of reach of children. If it is placed on the outside, it must sit at least 1.5 metres off the ground. Hydraulic hinges are strongly recommended to guarantee the gate closes every time.
The September 30, 2027 deadline
