How much does a pool fence cost in Quebec?
The cost of a pool fence in Quebec generally ranges from $25 to $300 per linear foot installed, depending on the material, the height and the complexity of the project. For a typical residential project of 50 linear feet, expect to pay between $1,500 and $15,000 all in. Aluminum sits in the $50 to $150 per linear foot range, which gives it one of the best quality-to-durability ratios on the Quebec market. Beyond the purchase price, several other factors influence the final cost: the height, the number of gates, the type of ground and installation by a licensed contractor. If your pool was installed in 2010 or earlier, keep in mind that the provincial regulation requires you to bring your fence into compliance by September 30, 2027.

Aluminum pool fence: $50 to $150 per linear foot
Aluminum is the go-to material for pool fences in Quebec, and for good reason. It doesn’t rust, doesn’t rot and stands up to freeze-thaw cycles with no particular maintenance. The factory-baked powder-coated finish holds its colour and its appearance for 30 to 50 years, with no repainting required. The higher upfront cost is offset by the absence of maintenance and a lifespan longer than any other residential option. It is also the most versatile material: it pairs with our aluminum railings, our balconies and our existing guardrails to create a cohesive look around your backyard.
Glass pool fence: $90 to $200 per linear foot
A tempered glass fence gives you a completely unobstructed view of your pool and a modern design that is in high demand. The glass panels are mounted on aluminum or stainless steel posts, with stainless steel hardware. It is the most upscale option aesthetically, but glass requires regular cleaning to stay clear and remains more vulnerable to impact than a solid aluminum structure.
Wood pool fence: $25 to $100 per linear foot
Wood (cedar, treated pine, exotic species) brings a natural warmth that blends well with traditional landscaping. Its upfront cost is attractive, but wood needs a stain or a sealer every 2 to 5 years to hold up against moisture and UV rays. Without maintenance, a wood fence shows visible deterioration as early as year five and often has to be replaced after 10 to 15 years.
Frost and chain-link fence: $25 to $40 per linear foot
Frost fencing is the cheapest option on the market, but be careful: it generally does not meet provincial requirements for residential pools. Standard mesh can be climbed by children, which puts it in breach of the regulation. For a mesh fence to be accepted around a pool, the openings have to be smaller than 30 mm OR privacy slats have to be inserted. Before going with this solution, confirm compliance with your municipality.
Removable pool fence: $45 to $65 per linear foot
A removable fence (often mesh on PVC posts, certified to F-2286-16) can be put up and taken down as needed. It is practical as a temporary barrier during construction work, or for homeowners who want to take the fence down in the off-season. Several removable models meet provincial standards, but their durability remains lower than that of a permanent aluminum fence.
What factors influence the cost of a pool fence?
Beyond the material, five main factors make the final price of your project vary — sometimes by a factor of two for the same length of fence.
Length in linear feet
The bigger your pool, the longer the total run of fence. That said, economies of scale work in your favour: the price per linear foot generally drops as the total length goes up, because fixed costs (travel, mobilization, delivery) are spread over more feet. Measure the exact perimeter you need to enclose before requesting your quotes.
Fence height
The minimum height required in Quebec is 1.2 metres (4 feet), but many homeowners opt for 5 or 6 feet for more privacy. The price difference between 4 and 6 feet is generally only 10 to 15%, which often makes it a worthwhile investment.
Number of gates and corners
Each gate adds between $200 and $400 to the project (including the self-closing hardware and the automatic latching required by the regulation). Commercial-grade hydraulic hinges cost more but last considerably longer. Corners and turns also add to fabrication complexity, especially for custom aluminum models.
Ground and terrain type
Flat ground that is easy to dig makes for a quick installation. A slope, rocky soil or the presence of obstacles (roots, buried utility lines) can increase installation costs by 20 to 30%. Anchoring in concrete costs more than mounting on base plates, but it offers far better stability in Quebec’s clay soils.
Model complexity
Standard black or white aluminum models are the most affordable. Custom colours, premium finishes (anodized, charcoal grey, mocha brown), laser-cut patterns and ornamental models can double the price per linear foot. Custom fabrication does, however, deliver a lifespan and an aesthetic fit that no batch-produced product can match.
Pool fence installation cost
Installation costs account for a significant share of the total price. Depending on the type of project and the complexity of the terrain, labour can represent 25 to 40% of the overall budget.
Average labour cost
Professional installation of an aluminum pool fence generally costs between $15 and $35 per linear foot, depending on complexity. That covers site preparation, staking, digging the holes, setting the posts in concrete or on base plates, assembling the panels and installing the gates. For a typical residential project on the North Shore or in Greater Montreal, labour is added to the material prices shown above. Professional installation or DIY?
Doing it yourself can look like a money-saver, but it carries several risks. A poorly installed fence can be deemed non-compliant during a municipal inspection, which forces you to redo the work and exposes you to the fines set out in the regulation. A contractor holding an active RBQ licence knows the provincial and municipal requirements, guarantees a compliant installation and offers a warranty on both materials and labour. On a project of this scale, the savings from going DIY are rarely worth the risk.
What a complete quote should include
An honest, detailed quote should include: fabrication or supply of the panels and posts, complete hardware (hinges, latches, caps), delivery to the site, site preparation, post anchoring, assembly, gate installation and compliance with the standards. Be wary of unusually low quotes: the items most often left out are clearing, handling of grade changes, masonry work for the posts and travel fees. Always ask for a detailed line-by-line breakdown.
Why choose an aluminum pool fence?
For homeowners who see their fence as a long-term investment, aluminum offers the best durability-to-price ratio on the Quebec market. The factory-baked powder-coated finish resists UV rays, acid rain and freeze-thaw cycles with no regular maintenance at all. Where a wood fence has to be stained every 3 years and replaced after 15 years, an aluminum fence keeps its appearance for 30 to 50 years with the occasional wash using soapy water. That durability also translates into better resale value when the time comes to sell.
Aluminum is also the most versatile material for creating a cohesive look around your pool. It pairs perfectly with our aluminum balconies and our aluminum stringers for access stairs, letting you unify the aesthetic of your entire backyard. For an installation in Terrebonne and across the North Shore, we fabricate custom pieces in our local workshop.
Pool fence regulations in Quebec in 2026
The Residential Swimming Pool Safety Regulation governs the installation and the compliance of fences everywhere in Quebec. Four main requirements apply to every pool holding at least 60 cm of water.
Minimum height of 1.2 metres
The fence has to measure at least 1.2 metres (4 feet) from ground level or from any nearby structure that could be climbed. No table, bench, decorative stone or shrub should serve as a foothold for climbing over the barrier. This requirement applies around the full perimeter of the pool, with no exceptions.
Maximum 10 cm spacing between bars
Openings in the fence must prevent a spherical object 10 cm (4 inches) in diameter from passing through. This rule is meant to keep young children from slipping between the bars. For chain-link fences, openings must measure 30 mm or less, or be fitted with privacy slats that reduce the gap.
Self-closing gates and automatic latching
Every gate giving access to the pool must close and latch automatically after each use. The safety latch has to be installed on the inside of the fence, out of reach of children. If it is placed on the outside, it must sit at least 1.5 metres off the ground. Hydraulic hinges are strongly recommended to guarantee the gate closes every time.
The September 30, 2027 deadline
This is the date to remember: every residential pool installed before November 1, 2010, has to be brought into compliance by September 30, 2027. Pools installed after that date were already required to be compliant from the moment they went in. Owners who do not meet the new regulations face fines of $500 to $1,000 per day until they comply, on top of taking on civil liability in the event of an accident.
Frequently asked questions about pool fence costs
What is the average cost of a pool fence in Quebec?
For a typical 50-linear-foot residential aluminum project, expect to pay between $3,000 and $6,000 all in, fabrication and installation included. The price climbs with the total length, the number of gates, the complexity of the model and the difficulty of the terrain. For a glass or ornamental iron project, the budget can easily double.
Does an aluminum pool fence last a long time?
Yes. A quality aluminum fence, properly installed and finished with a factory-baked powder coating, keeps its appearance and its rigidity for 30 to 50 years. That is well ahead of wood (10-20 years), composite (10-25 years) or PVC (15-25 years). No regular maintenance is required beyond an occasional wash with soapy water.
Do you need a permit to install a pool fence?
Most municipalities in Quebec require a permit or a certificate of authorization to install a pool fence, but the rules vary. Check with your city’s urban planning department before starting the work. A municipal inspection may be carried out after installation to verify compliance. An experienced contractor can guide you through the process.
Is a removable or a permanent fence the better choice?
It depends on how you use it. A permanent aluminum fence offers more security, more durability and better resale value. A certified removable fence can be practical for homeowners who take their pool down in the off-season or who want to preserve the look of their yard. Both options can be compliant with the regulation, provided they meet the minimum height and the latching requirements.
