FAQ – Pool Fence Regulations (September 2025)
Are pool fences mandatory? ❓
Yes.
According to the provincial regulation on residential pool safety, all pools installed after 2010 must already be surrounded by a compliant fence. Starting September 2025, all pools, regardless of installation date—must meet the updated safety standards.
What are the safety standards to follow? ❓
Your pool fence must meet the following criteria:
✔ Minimum height of 1.2 m (4 feet)
✔ Self-closing, self-latching gate with an automatic lock
✔ Bars spaced less than 10 cm (4 inches) apart to prevent children from squeezing through
✔ No climbable surfaces near or on the fence
✔ Minimum 1-meter distance between the fence and the pool
➡ Important: Hedges, walls, or latticed wooden fences do not count as compliant pool safety barriers.
