Pool Fence Regulations in Quebec
Since July 2021, Quebec law on residential pool safety requires the installation of a compliant barrier around all pools, regardless of their year of installation. Here are the essential criteria to follow.
Minimum Height of a Pool Railing: 48 inches (1.2 m)
Any pool fence or railing must reach at least 1.2 meters (48 inches) in height, for both in-ground and above-ground pools.
Pool Gate: Self-Closing and Lockable
The access gate must close automatically and be equipped with a key-lockable latch, positioned out of reach of children.
Bar Spacing: Maximum 10 cm for Pool Railings
The bars of your pool railing must be spaced less than 10 cm apart to prevent a child from passing through or getting stuck.
No Footholds Allowing Climbing of the Pool Barrier
No equipment (heat pump, filtration system, bench) should be located within one meter of the fence to prevent any risk of climbing.
